Veterans & Therapists Suffer Under Trump’s DEI Cuts

A new report by National Public Radio reveals that both mental health therapists and the veterans they serve are facing significant challenges due to President Donald Trump’s job cuts and anti-DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies. Therapists are particularly concerned about the potential loss of 80,000 jobs within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), with one therapist named Lynn stating that the constant fear of layoffs has severely impacted her ability to focus at work.

Veterans seeking therapy for issues such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and gender dysphoria are also affected. Lynn expressed particular concern for LGBTQ+ patients, citing Trump’s anti-DEI order that recognizes only two genders. This policy has led to the removal of symbols like rainbow flags from VA facilities, leaving therapists feeling pressured to report colleagues who violate the ban.

Some therapists have resorted to subtle acts of defiance, displaying subversive art in their offices to show solidarity with LGBTQ+ clients. Meanwhile, veterans are anxious about the anti-DEI rule, requesting the removal of references to their gender identity or sexual orientation from their medical records.

Despite these concerns, a VA spokesperson stated that the agency remains committed to supporting veterans and mental health services. However, many fear that Trump’s policies could undermine this commitment and further harm those in need.
