U.S. President Trump Reiterates Plans to Control, Develop Gaza
U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his commitment to taking control of the Gaza Strip, referring to it as a “big real estate site” in need of transformation. Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump emphasized his intention to engage other Middle Eastern nations in rebuilding and developing the enclave.
Trump initially proposed this idea during a press conference last week with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His vision involves turning Gaza into what he described as “the Riviera of the Middle East.” As part of this plan, Trump suggested relocating Palestinians living in Gaza to neighboring Arab countries while development is underway.
“I’m committed to buying and owning Gaza… We’re going to bring stability to the totally war-torn part of the Middle East. And we’ll own it,” Trump stated on Sunday. He reiterated his proposal to temporarily relocate Palestinians, claiming this would be done for their benefit.
“People can’t live in those buildings right now, they’re unsafe… But we’re going to take care of the Palestinians. We’re going to make sure they live beautifully and in harmony and in peace,” Trump stated, insisting that Palestinians would prefer alternative living arrangements if given a choice.
Trump claimed that Palestinians wouldn’t want to return to Gaza once they have other options. He expressed confidence that neighboring Arab nations would be “enthusiastic” about taking them in after discussions with him, but did not elaborate on how he would persuade them. Trump also mentioned plans for other Middle Eastern states to build sections of Gaza once it’s cleared for development.
While Israel has welcomed Trump’s initiative, key regional players and many global powers have strongly opposed the idea. The plan faces significant challenges and skepticism from various international stakeholders.
