Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, known as a strong supporter of Donald Trump, recently criticized the President over his recent threats to impose massive tariffs on Canada. Trump had warned of imposing steep duties, including a proposed 250% tax on dairy products, citing years of trade disputes with Canada.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Shapiro argued that Canada is not an adversary but rather the top trade partner of the United States. He emphasized that treating Canada as a threat would be unwise and counterproductive. ‘Canada is the number one trade partner of the United States,’ Shapiro said. ‘They are not a financial or economic or physical threat to the United States. Treating them as such is not a wise move.’
Brian Lilley, a political columnist for the Toronto Sun, highlighted Shapiro’s comments on X, noting that despite Shapiro’s alliance with Trump—he attended the President’s joint address and supports many of his policies—Shapiro has consistently expressed positive feelings toward Canada. Lilley pointed out that Shapiro has visited Canada and even had family members living there. ‘This was shared with his 9 million FB followers today,’ Lilley noted.
Shapiro’s criticism comes amid growing tensions between the U.S. and Canada over trade issues, particularly in the dairy and lumber industries. Trump’s recent remarks about Canada have sparked concern among policymakers and business leaders on both sides of the border, who worry that such actions could escalate into a broader trade conflict.
