Speaker Calls Dems' Claims False: No Cuts to Medicare, Medicaid

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) strongly criticized Democrats, accusing them of spreading falsehoods regarding the House Republicans’ funding bill. During a press conference on Capitol Hill, Johnson asserted that the bill would pass and prevent a government shutdown. He claimed to have the necessary votes to secure its approval. Johnson accused Democrats of orchestrating a smear campaign against the GOP’s continuing resolution, stating, ‘They either have an issue with reading comprehension or they are attempting one of the most shameful misinformation campaigns we’ve ever seen.’

Johnson read a statement from House Democrats’ leadership team, which he claimed was entirely fabricated. He said, ‘Every single word of that is a lie. They didn’t read the bill. It’s nonsense.’ He further emphasized that the bill does not include any cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, or veterans’ benefits, calling it a ‘clean CR with no poison pill riders.’

Johnson accused Democrats of falsely claiming that the bill would harm Americans by cutting essential programs. He said, ‘People are not buying this,’ and highlighted the contrast between Republicans leading for the American people and Democrats resorting to misinformation. Johnson concluded by suggesting that Democrats were eager for a government shutdown, which Republicans aimed to avoid.
