Saudi Arabia: Trump's Gaza Plan 'Unacceptable'

Saudi Arabia has emphasized that a Palestinian state is crucial for lasting peace in the region. The Foreign Ministry stated on Wednesday, “Permanent peace” can only be achieved by establishing a Palestinian state.

The ministry rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians from their land and reiterated its firm commitment to creating a Palestinian state. This statement comes following US President Donald Trump’s proposal for an American takeover of Gaza.

Trump suggested the US could assume control of Gaza, clear damaged buildings, and transform it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” He also proposed permanently resettling Palestinians outside of Gaza. While not directly addressing these remarks, Saudi Arabia’s statement appears to be a response.

The ministry affirmed its unequivocal rejection of any infringement on Palestinian rights, including Israeli settlement policies or attempts to displace Palestinians. It stressed that “permanent peace” requires Palestinians securing their legitimate rights to statehood, urging more countries to recognize Palestine based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Saudi Arabia will not establish ties with Israel until this key condition is met, maintaining a non-negotiable stance towards Palestinian rights. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump for thinking “outside the box” regarding his Gaza proposal.

Palestinian statehood remains a contentious issue in the Middle East, with various proposals and counter-proposals circulating among global powers. Saudi Arabia’s latest statement underscores its commitment to supporting Palestinian rights and securing a lasting peace agreement.
