The Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Anita Among, has urged the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon. Peace Mutuuzo, to take steps to make the Succession (Amendment) Act 2022 more widely known among the public. Speaking at a recent meeting, Among highlighted the law’s potential to address long-standing issues faced by women during property distribution. She pointed out that since its passage two years ago, the Act has already shown positive results in improving gender equality and protecting women’s rights in inheritance matters. The speaker emphasized the importance of widespread awareness and implementation of the law to ensure its benefits reach all citizens, particularly those in rural areas who may not be fully informed about their legal rights under the Succession Act. This call to action underscores the government’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and ensuring fair treatment under the law.
