Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued a public apology to the American people, expressing regret over considering drastic measures such as cutting off energy supplies from Canada in response to U.S. tariffs. The tariffs, imposed by President Donald Trump, have led Canada to explore retaliatory actions. During an interview with CNN’s John Berman, Ford stated that the situation was unnecessary and emphasized his intent to protect Ontarians while maintaining a positive relationship with the U.S.
Ford initially revealed to Politico that he was prepared to take extreme measures, including reducing energy exports to states like Michigan, New York, and Wisconsin. However, during his CNN appearance, he clarified his stance, stating, ‘This is unnecessary and we do have to retaliate.’ He stressed the importance of protecting Canadian interests while expressing a desire to maintain strong ties with the U.S.
The Ontario Premier also highlighted Canada’s role as a major customer for American goods and emphasized the mutual benefits of trade between the two nations. Ford described a surge in patriotic sentiment across Canada, noting that some consumers were refusing to purchase American products in response to the tariffs. He reiterated his determination to use all available tools to convey a strong message to Trump about the inappropriate nature of the tariffs.
When asked by Berman about Trump’s motivations for imposing the tariffs and what it would take to lift them, Ford responded with skepticism, stating, ‘No one knows what the ask is.’ He suggested that Trump’s demands could be unpredictable, depending on his daily whims. This uncertainty has complicated efforts to resolve the trade dispute.
The situation underscores the strained relationship between Canada and the U.S., particularly under Trump’s administration, as both sides seek to protect their economic interests while navigating the complexities of international trade.
