New Chairman to Lead Printing Industry Future

Andreas Gierth has been appointed the new Chairman of the World Printers Forum, bringing with him extensive experience cultivated over years of service on the organization’s board. Currently serving as Director of Production and Strategic Procurement at Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, alongside his role as General Manager of Media Service – the newspaper’s logistics division – Gierth is well-positioned to lead the forum into a dynamic future.
In a recent interview, Gierth outlined his vision for the Printers Community within WAN-IFRA, emphasizing its crucial role in the evolving media landscape. He envisions a more interconnected ecosystem focused on knowledge sharing, best practices, and the adoption of technological advancements, particularly in areas like sustainable printing, automation, and the integration of digital solutions.
Gierth highlighted the importance of the upcoming World Printers Summit in Munich, describing it as a unique platform for industry professionals to gain insights into current trends, engage in valuable discussions, and forge partnerships. He strongly encourages attendance, citing the summit’s combination of expert presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.
Despite a shrinking market for print products, Gierth remains optimistic about the future of the printed newspaper. He believes its physical presence, tactile quality, and ability to foster focused reading remain valuable attributes, even in a digital age. His vision centers on enhancing sustainability and efficiency while leveraging the inherent strengths of print – credibility and depth – within a hybrid model that seamlessly integrates print and digital offerings. He confidently predicts the continued relevance of printed newspapers beyond 2030, fueled by innovation and a commitment to sustainability.
This appointment signals a proactive approach for the World Printers Forum, recognizing the need for adaptation and innovation within the printing industry. Gierth’s emphasis on sustainability and integration of digital technologies is particularly noteworthy, reflecting a realistic and forward-thinking perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. It’s a smart move for the forum to position itself as a hub for these crucial conversations, ensuring its continued relevance in a rapidly changing media environment. The focus on a hybrid model is also sensible; acknowledging the digital shift while preserving the unique qualities of print seems a viable path forward for many publications.
