Russia Reiterates Support for Two-State Solution in Middle East
Russia maintains its stance on resolving the Middle East conflict, advocating for a two-state solution. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has once again emphasized this position, rejecting US President Donald Trump’s proposal to relocate Gaza’s Palestinian population.
Trump suggested permanently resettling the approximately two million Palestinians in Gaza to countries like Egypt and Jordan. The US would then oversee efforts to rebuild the territory, which has seen extensive destruction due to conflict with Israel and Hamas. According to UN data, around 92% of homes in Gaza have been severely damaged or destroyed.
Moscow’s position is clear: the only viable solution is the creation of a Palestinian state coexisting alongside Israel. This stance aligns with the majority view of countries involved in the issue and is enshrined in relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Kremlin spokesman Peskov underscored Russia’s commitment to this approach, stating that it believes this is the only possible option.
Trump’s resettlement idea has been met with rejection from major Arab nations, including Egypt and Jordan, as well as Russia. When asked to clarify his use of the term “takeover,” Trump described a “long-term ownership position” intended to bring stability to the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the plan, suggesting it could significantly impact history.
The proposal has faced widespread international criticism. Palestinian authorities have condemned it for violating international law, and numerous countries, including Arab nations, Germany, China, and Turkey, have also expressed disapproval. Russia continues to call for conflict de-escalation and a return to negotiations, actively engaging in diplomatic efforts towards this end.
