Family Dog's Attack Claims Infant's Life

A seven-month-old girl, Elizah Turner of Columbus, Ohio, died Tuesday following a dog attack by one of her family’s three pit bulls. The tragedy has left her parents and responding officers deeply distraught.

Mackenzie Copley, Elizah’s mother, shared her devastation on Facebook, expressing incomprehension at the loss. She posted photos of her daughter affectionately interacting with the dogs, stating, “I am so lost and broken. This was the same dog who was side by side with my baby every single day.” Her post, and similar expressions of grief from her husband, Kameron Turner, highlight the unimaginable pain of losing a child. Mr. Turner described the situation as profoundly unfair, questioning how he could continue life without his daughter.

According to Columbus Police Sgt. James Fuqua, the incident occurred at the family home on South Champion Avenue. He characterized the attack as a sudden and heartbreaking tragedy, noting it escalated rapidly and appeared accidental. Sgt. Fuqua emphasized the profound impact the scene had on first responders, many of whom are parents themselves. “Everyone in this process is literally grieving as if this child belonged to us,” he stated.

The Franklin County Coroner’s Office confirmed Elizah’s identity. Franklin County Animal Control has taken custody of all three dogs pending a thorough investigation, with decisions regarding their future to be made following its completion.

Elizah’s obituary remembers her as a joyful and vibrant child, “spunky, happy… and she was never without a smile.” It describes her as a source of light and purpose for her family.

This incident is a stark reminder of the potential dangers of even seemingly gentle animals. While responsible pet ownership includes socialization and training, the inherent power and unpredictability of certain breeds, particularly pit bulls, necessitate extreme caution, especially around infants and young children. The grief experienced by this family is immeasurable, and this tragedy underscores the critical need for ongoing dialogue about pet safety and responsible breeding practices. It’s a heartbreaking situation where, despite apparent affection between the child and the dog, a fatal incident occurred, leaving a community in mourning.
