Danish Group Proposes $1 Trillion California Purchase, Pastries Included, in Response to Trump’s Greenland Interest
A Danish crowdfunding group has humorously proposed acquiring the U.S. state of California from President Donald Trump in exchange for $1 trillion and an unlimited supply of Danish pastries. This satirical offer comes in response to Trump’s repeated interest in purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
Trump has expressed his desire to buy Greenland on multiple occasions, citing its strategic and economic value to the U.S. However, both Danish and Greenlandic officials have firmly rejected this idea. Despite the opposition, Trump has suggested he would consider using military or economic force to obtain the territory, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also treating the proposal seriously.
In response to these developments, the ‘Denmarkification’ group from Denmark presented their own counteroffer to Trump. They propose taking California off his hands in exchange for $1 trillion and a lifetime supply of Danish pastries. The group pointed out that Trump has previously described California as “the most ruined” state in the U.S.
The proposal is presented as a crowdfunded effort, with each Danish citizen estimated to contribute around 200,000 kroner ($27,675), or roughly the price of “a few lattes.” The group jokingly suggested that acquiring California would bring Danish cultural values such as ‘hygge’ (comfort), bike lanes, and Smorrebrod sandwiches to the state. They also proposed renaming Disneyland to Hans Christian Andersenland.
Founder of the group, Xavier Dutoit, humorously suggested that LEGO executives should lead negotiations with the U.S., citing their experience dealing with children during tantrums over missing bricks as excellent preparation for such talks.
Trump’s idea to purchase Greenland has faced significant pushback, including from Greenlanders themselves. A recent Danish poll revealed that only 6% of Greenlanders expressed a desire to join the U.S. Despite this opposition, Trump’s administration continues to explore potential avenues for acquiring the territory.
