Trump: Denmark's Greenland Defense 'Laughed At' Worldwide

Copenhagen plans to bolster its military presence on Greenland, reaffirming its status as a reliable ally to Washington amid US President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in purchasing the strategically important territory.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire Greenland, citing its significance for US national security and even hinting at the possibility of using military force. However, Denmark has firmly rejected any such suggestion, stating that Greenland is not for sale and its future should be determined solely by its inhabitants.

In an apparent jab at Denmark’s plans to increase its military presence in the Arctic region, Trump dismissed their efforts as inadequate protection for Greenland. He criticized the country’s recent deployment of two inspection vessels, two drones, and two dog sled patrols, claiming that it was insufficient to safeguard the territory.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, however, emphasized her nation’s strong alliance with the US, highlighting Denmark’s role as a NATO member state and its participation in US-led military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. She also reiterated Copenhagen’s position on Greenland’s sovereignty, emphasizing that the island’s future should be determined by its people.

The tension between the two allies was further highlighted by reports of a heated phone conversation between Trump and Frederiksen earlier this month, with European officials describing it as “horrendous.” Despite the strained relations, Denmark continues to strengthen its military presence in Greenland, underscoring its commitment to protecting the territory’s interests.
