President Trump Hints at US Territorial Expansion
US President Donald Trump has suggested that the nation’s territory could increase in size in the near future, according to recent statements.
In a speech delivered in Las Vegas on Saturday, Trump expressed his ambition to expand US territory. He mentioned specific interest in annexing Greenland, Canada, and securing control over the Panama Canal. “We might be an enlarged country pretty soon,” he told supporters.
Trump compared the US’s current size to its historical footprint, noting that it had remained largely stagnant for decades. However, he suggested that this could change in the near future.
In a recent phone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Trump reportedly pressed Denmark to relinquish control of Greenland. This move left Danish officials “utterly freaked out,” according to a report by the Financial Times.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been firm in rejecting Trump’s offers to buy the island. Despite this, Trump has persisted in his pursuit, initially floating the idea during his first term in 2019. Last month, he stated that “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for US national security.
The Arctic island, home to around 60,000 people and hosting the US Pituffik base, has been a subject of interest for the US due to its strategic location and potential mineral resources. However, Greenland’s pro-independence leaders and Danish officials have consistently rejected Trump’s proposals.
