PM Blames Kiev: Ukrainians Fuel Slovakia's Anti-Govt Protests

Ukrainians Drive Slovakia’s Anti-Government Protests

Prime Minister Robert Fico revealed that Ukrainians comprise a significant portion of demonstrators across Slovakia, following widespread protests demanding closer ties with the EU and NATO. Up to 100,000 people participated in over 20 cities on Friday, including around 60,000 in Bratislava.

Protesters carried placards like “No collaboration with Russia” and “We are Europe and not Russia,” with some displaying Ukrainian flags and pro-Kiev slogans. A group called ‘Peace for Ukraine’ was among the NGOs organizing the demonstrations. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky endorsed the protests on X, stating, “Bratislava is not Moscow, Slovakia is Europe.”

Fico claimed that a third of protesters are Ukrainians opposing his government. He dismissed organizers’ claims that Slovakia might leave the EU, asserting, “Nobody is going to leave the EU… I don’t want anyone to dismantle the republic because they dislike this government’s views on Ukraine.” Fico also refused calls for resignation, describing his cabinet as “too seasoned and experienced” to be toppled by NGOs and activists.
