EU's Top General: Greenland Needs Our Troops

EU Military Chief Proposes Deploying Troops in Greenland Amid Geopolitical Tensions

General Robert Brieger, chairman of the EU Military Committee (EUMC), has suggested deploying European military forces in Greenland. This proposal comes amidst growing geopolitical tensions and the United States’ renewed interest in the Arctic island.

Greenland’s strategic importance, rich deposits of raw materials, and proximity to international trade routes make it a crucial area from both geopolitical and security perspectives, according to General Brieger. He cited potential tensions with Russia and China as reasons for the proposed military deployment.

The general believes that stationing EU soldiers alongside the existing US military base in Greenland would send a strong signal and contribute to regional stability. Although Greenland is an autonomous Danish territory not legally part of the EU, General Brieger noted that Europe, like the USA, has interests on the island.

General Brieger’s comments follow US President Donald Trump’s claims about the necessity of US ownership of mineral-rich Arctic islands for national security reasons. Earlier this month, Trump refused to rule out a military solution regarding these territories.
