180+ Mafia Bosses Arrested: Meloni Hails 'Hard Blow'

Italian Police Deal Major Blow to Cosa Nostra Mafia in Palermo

In an extensive operation, Italian police have apprehended 181 suspected members of the notorious Cosa Nostra mafia in Palermo. The arrests, including high-ranking bosses and alleged extortionists, were part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organized crime in Sicily and prevent the mafia’s resurgence.

The raid, coordinated by the Anti-Mafia Directorate in Palermo, involved over 1,200 officers. It was described as a significant setback for organized crime, with police also seizing more than 50kg of drugs. Those arrested are linked to multiple mafia clans operating across Palermo and surrounding areas, facing charges that include mafia association, attempted murder, drug trafficking, extortion, illegal gambling, and weapons offenses.

Cosa Nostra, which terrorized Italy in the 1980s and 1990s, remains active despite decades of law enforcement crackdowns. Investigators warn that the organization continues to work towards rebuilding its influence.

Mafia’s Resurgence and Recruitment Efforts

Palermo’s chief prosecutor, Maurizio De Lucia, confirmed the mafia’s activity, stating, “The mafia is absolutely active - and is trying to recreate the army of the past.” He noted that many young people are influenced by returning old bosses. Among those arrested were recently freed mafia leaders who had resumed control of criminal operations.

Encrypted Communication Technologies

Authorities revealed that Cosa Nostra has been systematically using encrypted smartphones to evade law enforcement, enabling fugitives to manage criminal enterprises remotely. This modern twist on traditional communication methods highlights the need for continuous adaptation in countering organized crime.

Disruption of Criminal Activities

The operation is believed to have significantly disrupted Cosa Nostra’s ability to coordinate criminal activities in Palermo. However, officials warn that the organization remains determined to strengthen its power base despite sustained pressure from law enforcement.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Praise for the Operation

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the raids as a “hard blow” to Cosa Nostra’s attempt at a revival. Her statement underscores the government’s commitment to combating organized crime and supporting law enforcement efforts in Sicily.
